A Courtice retail worker is more than $58,000 richer after winning second prize in the August 7 LOTTO 6/49 draw.

Kathryn McLinton has been playing the lottery with OLG since the days of WINTARIO. When playing 6/49 she chooses her own numbers which are made up of special birthdays and those carefully selected numbers finally led her to her first big win and a cheque for $58,051.40.

“I usually check my tickets at night, but in this instance, I checked them in the morning. As I scanned through the winning numbers online, I saw I had matched five numbers, as well as the bonus number,” she recalled, while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to pick up her winnings. “I thought there had to be mistake and figured I’d go to the store and check my ticket in person.”

She used the ticket checker first and saw the prize amount before bringing the ticket to the store clerk and whispering, “I think I won!”

During the process at the lottery terminal, McLinton said she was in “pure shock.”

“I just kept thinking, ‘Things like this don’t happen to me.”

The first to hear her good news were her brother and sister. “I texted my brother, who said, ‘OMG! You have to tell mom!’ I also shared the news with my sister, and she asked me, ‘Did you add an extra zero?’ We shared a good laugh.”

With her winnings, McLinton said she plans to complete some home renovations.
