Doordash woman-led grants awarded to Burlington, Hamilton and Whitby restaurants

Butchie's, renowned for its smoked meats, was among 16 reciepients of the Doordash Woman-led grants.

Numerous restaurants around the country have been awarded Doordash grants through the delivery service’s new Made by Women platform including eateries in Burlington, Hamilton and Whitby.

Doordash announced the $10,000 grants, which are “designed to champion women chefs and restaurateurs” last week. “We’re proud to celebrate and amplify women-owned restaurants throughout the year, as making room at the table for underserved groups fosters lasting change within the culinary industry over time,” said Doordash General Manager Shilpa Arora.

In total 16 restaurants from Newfoundland to British Columbia received the grants including;

  • Joy Sushi in Burnaby, BC
  • Kanto by Tita Flips in Toronto, ON

  • Le Gateau Bakeshop in Vancouver, BC
  • Loukoumaki x Smashed+ in Scarborough, ON
  • Na-Re Korean Kitchen in Burnaby, BC
  • Nawab’s Indian Cuisine in Burlington, ON
  • Redchurch Cafe and Gallery in Hamilton, ON
  • Sugar Mama’s in St. John’s, NL
  • Suma’s Egyptian Grill in East York, ON
  • WangDao Bistro in Morden, MB
  • Z Bar and Grille in Toronto, ON

Nawab’s

Burlington’s Nawab’s is a Hyderabadi restaurant specializing in the cuisine of, Hyderabad, the capital of the south-central Indian state of Telangana. The city’s cuisine is a unique blend of South AsianMughalaiTurkic, and Arabic cuisines. It’s perhaps best known for its singular take on biryani (usually served with mutton), a famous variation considered synonymous with the city itself.

Nawab’s first opened in Mississauga in 2021 and quickly expanded into several locations across southern Ontario. The Burlington location sits at 2180 Itabashi Way Unit D4. They’re open from Noon to 10:30 p.m. every day.

Redchurch Cafe

The Redchurch Cafe focuses on “Art, coffee, prosecco, beer” according to their website. The place is named after a small street in Shoreditch, East London, UK  where the owners lived for a time.

The cafe features a rich variety of De Mello coffee, an ethically sourced company that features beans from around the world. They also serve a variety of sandwiches and baked goods.

Most notably Redchurch also features a gallery space in partnership with Hamilton’s artist collective The Assembly. The cafe sits by Gore Park at 68 King Street East. The grant comes at a good time for Redchurch as they recently suffered a flood.

As of this writing the coffee bar and gallery have reopened but the kitchen is closed. Redchurch is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the week and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the weekends.

Butchie’s

Butchie’s is run by Food Network celebrity chef Andrea Nicholson. Nicholson began her culinary career at age 13 and later trained as a red seal chef at George Brown College in Toronto.

She went on to train around Canada and the world at Luce, Via Allegro, The Fifth, Humber College, George Brown College, 35 Elm, Trattoria Nervosa, and Partner/Culinary Director of Great Cooks. Later she earned a degree from APN Naples, making her an official pizzaiuoli. She went on to host Fire Masters, Top Chef Canada All-Stars & Restaurant Takeover.

Butchie’s, named for Nicholson’s father, is a “meat plus three” style restaurant she told Whitby’s Food Guide, meaning the customer chooses a protein and up to three sides. This is a common format across the southern United States.

Options at Butchie’s included smoked meats like pulled pork or wings as well as buttermilk fried chicken. They also serve burgers, ice cream, homemade pies and craft beer.

The restaurant sit on 1.5 acres of green space at 939 Dundas Street West, just east of Highway 412. They’re open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
