Two adults and three children had to be rescued off Bowmanville’s shores after their waterbike broke down on Lake Ontario Sunday afternoon.

Durham Regional Police’s Marine Unit, with the assistance of officers from East Division, responded to the water rescue call Sunday at 2 p.m. near Cedar Crest Beach and Cove Road.

The group on the waterbike began to drift further out into the lake after the craft broke down, prompting several boaters in the area to attempt a rescue. Those efforts were unsuccessful but Marine Unit officers were able to locate the watercraft and take the victims aboard.

Emergency medical personnel on shore assessed the victims and no injuries were reported, police said,

The Marine Unit is reminding boaters to be prepared for any emergency by testing your equipment and watercraft to ensure it is functioning properly before hitting the water, and to always wear a life jacket.
