Durham Regional Police welcomed 13 new special constables Thursday in a special ceremony held in Oshawa’s Council Chambers.

The new Special Constables were sworn in and presented with their badges from Durham Police Chief Peter Moreira.

Special Constables provide important duties with the regular police force by ensuring the security and safety of people in custody as well as in the courtroom, noted Moreira.

“What they are about to embark on is a tough job, and we are proud of them for choosing this profession within our organization,” he said. “It is an honour to hand out your badges – you are choosing an incredibly important role.”

“Welcome to the Durham Regional Police Service.”

Moreira also thanked Justice Kathryn Fillier, Police Association President Andrew Tummonds and Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter for being part of the ceremony.
