Police say a 13-year-old Oshawa boy with two warrants out for his arrest was charged after allegedly fleeing from police in a stolen car and crashing the vehicle into a ditch.

Peterborough police said that around 6:45 a.m. on July 30, they received a call regarding a vehicle that had been allegedly stolen from a home in the Arndon Avenue and Monaghan Road area. Police say a bicycle was left in its place.

According to police, an officer saw the vehicle at a red light on Lansdowne Street in Peterborough. When the officer activated their emergency lights, the driver allegedly took off at a “high rate of speed” through the intersection and the pursuit was called off for safety reasons. Shortly after, police were called to the scene of a crash in the Highway 7 and Lansdowne Street area and saw the suspect vehicle upside down in a ditch.

The driver was assessed by paramedics and subsequently charged after police learned there were warrants out for his arrest.

The teenage suspect was charged with dangerous driving, fleeing from a peace officer, theft, failing to comply with his sentence and other Highway Traffic Act violations.

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court on July 30, 2024.
