Gunfire erupted in a residential Oshawa neighbourhood last night sending 14 rounds into several homes, with one landing under a child’s bed.
The shots rang out around 2 a.m. Mary Street North and Taunton Road East, a neighbourhood of detached homes and apartment buildings. When Durham Police officers arrived, they found several shell casings in the area.
This led to a large canvass of the area which found more rounds in several homes in a housing complex. Residents were at home in bed during the gunfire “severely compromising their safety,” police said. However, no one was reported injured.
One round was discovered under a child’s bed in one home. The child was not home at the time.
Again last night we saw 14 shots fired into a housing complex in Oshawa. Families were home sleeping while one or more coward(s) fired indiscriminately,” wrote Chief Peter Moriera, “We were very lucky no one was hurt. Our investigators are hard at work identifying those responsible.”
“The frequency of these incidents is of great concern and require dedicated resources to address,” he added, “It’s another sober reminder that the Region of Durham is not immune from gun-related crime.”
The investigation is ongoing. No suspects have been identified.
Police have encouraged any witnesses or anyone with security footage to come forward to investigators. Anyone with information can call police at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2741 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
