Two 14-year-old teens fell through thin ice on a pond in Ajax, Ontario.

Emergency crews were called to the pond in the residential area of Mandrake Street and Doric Street in Ajax yesterday (Feb. 26) around 4:20 p.m., Durham Regional Police said in a post on X.

The two teen boys had fallen through the ice, police said.

One of the teens was able to climb out of the water and back onto the ice while the other was trapped in the water.

With the help of Ajax Fire crews, nearby good samaritans, and police, the other youth got himself out of the water and onto the fragile ice, police said.

Both were able to safely cross the ice surface and then they were brought back to shore.

Paramedics treated the teens and transported them to hospital with minor injuries, police said.

There were warning signs on the body of water, police said.

Weather conditions this year have meant virtually no ice surface is safe in southern Ontario.

“Please remember, with rapidly fluctuating temperatures this winter season, frozen water does not mean the ice holds weight,” police said.
