Durham Region is about to see more than two dozen more electric vehicle chargers after a roll-out in Whitby and a sizable grant for Ajax.

Firstly, Whitby unveiled several new chargers at various town facilities. These include chargers at:

  • Brooklin Community Centre and Library – 8 Vipond Road
  • Centennial Building/1855 – 416 Centre Street South
  • Civic Recreation Complex – 555 Rossland Road East
  • Whitby Municipal Lot #5 – 201 Green Street
  • Iroquois Park Sports Centre – 500 Victoria Street West
  • McKinney Centre – 222 McKinney Drive
  • Operations Centre – 333 McKinney Drive
  • Town Hall – 575 Rossland Road, and
  • Whitby Marina – 301 Watson Street

The chargers have two different levels. Both have an initial service fee of $1.50. However, Level Two chargers charge $1.50 an hour for the first three hours, then $4 an hour. The Level Three charges are much steeper, at $19 an hour, but will charge a car much faster.

“Whitby has committed to climate action and achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions across the community by 2050. Transportation is currently the largest source of these greenhouse gas emissions in Durham Region and electric cars are part of the solution,” the town said.

Likewise, Ajax is investing in EV chargers with a $60,000 grant from the Ontario Government. This grant will fund eight new charges at:

  • Carruthers Marsh Pavilion – 55 Ashbury Boulevard, and
  • Rotary Park Pavilion – 177 Lake Driveway West

“This project aligns with the Town’s commitment to sustainability and green infrastructure, expanding zero-emission resources to support local economic and community development while protecting and preserving the environment,” Ajax wrote.

While the Whitby chargers are already available for use, the Ajax ones will be installed next summer.
