five least expensive houses durham oshawa pickering whitby clarington

Prospective buyers hoping to buy a house in the GTA aren’t likely to find truly inexpensive homes with much ease, but some municipalities are more affordable than others and the average cost of a home (all home types combined) in Durham is actually lower than other parts of the geographic area.

In fact, the average cost of housing hit $907,997 last month, meaning it’s more affordable than the York, Peel and Halton regions. But while that average price is still high, some homes in Pickering, Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington recently sold for $500,000 or less.

Here’s a look at five of the least expensive homes to change hands last month, courtesy of real estate website and brokerage Zoocasa:

45 Farewell St – Oshawa

Based on the listing, this bungalow doesn’t appear to be “move-in ready,” despite the fact that it was bought for $450,000 after being listed for $300,000. While the property appears to feature two bedrooms and one bathroom, the land itself seems to have been the biggest draw, as the home is in disrepair. “This detached bungalow is sitting on a massive 70-by-246-foot ravine lot, backing onto Harmony Creek. Come See The Potential!” the listing reads.

509 – 1600 Charles St – Whitby

This one-bedroom, one-bathroom condo in the Port of Whitby recently sold for $497,500 after being listed for $499,900. The unit, located in The Rowe, boasts engineered hardwood floors, an open-concept living space, an upgraded kitchen with granite countertops, a breakfast bar and a private balcony. The building itself features guest suites, a rooftop terrace and bike storage.

106 – 1480 Bayly St – Pickering

This Pickering condo recently sold for $500,000 after being listed for $519,900. The suite features one bedroom, one bathroom, one den and 10-foot ceilings. Offering more than 900 square feet of space, the ground-floor unit also offers an oversized terrace and upgraded interior. The building is close to highways and transit, as well as parks and trails.

105 – 1210 Radom St – Pickering

This spacious condo with two bedrooms and one bathroom recently sold for $500,000 after hitting the market at $515,000. Close to Frenchman’s Bay, Pickering Town Centre, and transit, the ground-floor unit offers an open-concept layout, a dining room, and a private fenced-in patio.

102 – 120 Aspen Springs Dr – Clarington

This modern and stylish Clarington condo sold for well over-asking, changing hands at $474,000 after being listed for $399,000. Boasting two bedrooms and one bathroom, this Bowmanville suite also offers an open-concept kitchen and living area, laminate flooring, a breakfast bar and a walk-in closet in the master bedroom.
