A dozen convenience stores in Durham Region, including three each in Oshawa and Clarington, have been granted a licence to sell beer, wine, cider and coolers beginning September 5.

The stores were vetted by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario before being granted a licence.

The move to allow alcohol sales in convenience stores was announced last spring, part of a promise by Premier Doug Ford to make alcohol sales more ‘convenient’ for Ontario consumers by allowing sales in local variety stores.

It’s expected more stores will apply as the program rolls out, with the goal of the ruling Progressive Conservatives the sale of alcohol in every convenience, grocery and big-box store in Ontario by the end of this year if they choose to take part in the program.
