There’s nothing like a double dose of a struggling Peterborough hockey team to bring the spark back into the Oshawa Generals.

A championship favourite heading into the season, the Generals started the season at 2-5-1 before meeting up with the Petes for a home-and-home series Thursday and Saturday, with Peterborough still looking for their first win. Peterborough went home Saturday night still searching for its first victory after getting swept by Oshawa, 2-1 in overtime at home Thursday and 4-2 at the Tribute Communities Centre Saturday.

Luca Marelli scored the tying goal in the third period and set up the extra time winner Thursday and added another goal two nights later in the sweep.

The Generals made it a perfect extended weekend Sunday with an emphatic 5-3 win on home ice against the defending Memorial Cup champion Saginaw Spirit, with star forward Beckett Sennecke scoring twice and adding an assist to drive the offence for Oshawa, who built up a 5-1 lead before coasting home with the win.

Colby Barrow, who arrived at the club in the first week of the season from Owen Sound, scored his first goal for his new club Sunday.

The sweep vaulted Oshawa all the way to first place in the Eastern Division and a likely return to the CHL’s top ten rankings.

Oshawa is still waiting to see if Calum Ritchie – currently on the roster of the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche – is returned to the club, a move that would give the club up-front talent on a par with any team in junior hockey. All three of Sennecke, Barlow and Ritchie are first round draft picks.

The Oshawa Generals’ next home game is Sunday, October 27, when they take on the Petes once again.
