Winter is once again upon the Town of Ajax and to keep residents in good health over the frosty days to come, the Town has announced the return of Winter TOA, an activity program designed to keep residents healthy and safe during a burgeoning new phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Residents can get out and about to skate or explore at a variety of locations around Ajax’s winter wonderland.

Throughout the pandemic, Ajax has promoted the benefits of safe outdoor activities to support the physical and mental health of our community via our popular Active TOA program and complementary Winter TOA program,” Mayor Shaun Collier said of last year’s successful program. “With a wide variety of activities to choose from, there is truly something for everyone, regardless of age or ability.”

“I hope to see you out taking health breaks outdoors, and enjoying the lights at Pat Bayly Square. Remember to follow the 3W’s – wear a mask, wash your hands and watch your distance – dress for the weather, and have fun.”

Skating at Pat Bayly square is opening in the middle of December. Residents will be able to skate everyday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. No registration is required, but as this is an open rink, it is weather dependant.

COVID-19 protocols must be observed and Town staff “strongly recommend,” attendees wear masks on and off the ice. Masks will also be required inside the building. While bathrooms are open, the changing rooms will remain closed.

Indoor skating is available at Ajax Community Centre. More information can be gleaned from the Ajax Operations Department.

Ajax is also maintaining 150 km of walking trails and sidewalks around town for residents to explore, including the seven-kilometre William A. Parish Waterfront Trail and 6.5 kilometres of trails in Greenwood Conservation Area. Birdwatching and cross-country skiing are encouraged at Greenwood, but attendees will need to bring their own equipment.

Those without equipment will be able to explore via snowshoe, starting in January when Ajax rolls out its lending program.

All parking lots will be open along the waterfront and at Greenwood.
