Ajax hospital takes honours for first baby born in 2023

Anthony Powell – all four pounds six of him – and mom Jennifer Lopez are doing fine after little Anthony became the first baby born in Durham Region in 2023 when he was welcomed into the world at Ajax-Pickering General Hospital at 2:46 a.m. January 1.

Anthony is the first child for proud parents Lopez and Akeem Powell of Oshawa.

Port Perry Hospital’s New Life Centre was the place for baby #2 in Durham when baby boy Kerrigan was welcomed by proud parents Rachel Kerrigan and Kevin Hannah at 9:17 a.m., weighing six pounds eight ounces.

Lakeridge Health also welcomed the last babies born in 2022 on December 31. At the Oshawa Hospital, proud parents Stephanie and Derek Rider welcomed baby Thomas Rider at 8:23 p.m. weighing six pounds 15 ounces – the last baby born in 2022 in Durham Region.

At Ajax-Pickering Hospital, baby boy Perry arrived at 5:18 p.m. weighing 10 pounds four ounces, a few hours after baby girl Belle Tomlin arrived at 12:19 p.m. at Port Perry Hospital, weighing nine pounds even.

With birthing suites at the Ajax Pickering, Oshawa, and Port Perry Hospitals, the skilled and compassionate team in Lakeridge Health’s Maternal Newborn Program delivers close to 4,500 babies each year.
