Ajax man wanted after discovery of gun at Whitby traffic stop leads to flight from police

Police are looking for a man who fled from a traffic stop in Whitby after officers spotted a handgun under the front seat.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Paul Andres Fernandez, 27, of Ajax, who is wanted for flight from police, obstruction and dangerous driving.
Durham Police initiated the traffic stop near Brock and Dundas streets in Whitby’s downtown at 2:20 a.m. on August 9 after spotting a “suspicious vehicle.” While speaking with the driver, officers observed a firearm under the front passenger seat and demanded the driver exit the car.
Instead, the driver took off. Police engaged in a brief pursuit but discontinued it a short distance later.
