All beaches in Durham Region have been posted as unsafe for swimming due to elevated bacteria levels.

The Region began testing beaches for the week of June 5. That week they found all beaches were safe though they noted a risk from blue-green algae in Lake Scugog. The tests are routine and unless otherwise noted reflect regular monitoring.

However, after some torrential rains over the last week, the tests for the week of June 12 found higher levels of bacteria on all beaches in the region.

As such all the below beaches are posted as unsafe;

  • Paradise Beach (Ajax)
  • Beaverton North, Beaverton South and Thorah Centennial Park (Brock)
  • Bowmanville East, Bowmanville West and Newcastle Beach Central (Clarington)
  • Lakeview Beach East and Lakeview Beach West (Oshawa)
  • Frenchman’s Bay East and Frenchman’s Bay West (Pickering)
  • Kinsmen Beach (Scugog)
  • Whitby Beach – Heydenshore Park and Iroquois Beach (Whitby)
