Durham Police are investigating last Wednesday’s south Oshawa fire at a boxing gym as an arson case.

Oshawa Fire and DRPS responded to reports of the fire at Speak Easy Boxing and Training Academy on Bloor Street West shortly before 9 p.m. January 12.

The fire was active when first responders arrived, but Oshawa Fire was quickly able to douse the flames. Investigation of the scene produced evidence that the fire had been deliberately set causing at least $100,000 in damage to the building.

The Ontario Fire Marshall has been informed and they are conducting a parallel investigation of their own.

Investigators believe a black Ford transit van recorded at the scene was involved in the crime, and are looking for a suspect.

Speak Easy is a fairly new business in the city, opening over the pandemic according to their website. They announced on their Facebook page the gym is closed until further notice.
