Residents looking to beat the heat in north Clarington can make a splash this weekend at the Orono Park pool during the summer grand opening June 22-23.

Swimming will be free Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

The park at 61 Princess Street – affectionally known by locals as ‘Buttercup Hollow Park’ – boasts a playground (ages 2 to 12), tennis and pickleball courts (available on a first-come, first-serve basis from May to October), the Orono Skateboard Park, a softball diamond (with lights), picnic tables and if the pool is not to your child’s liking, a splash pad as another way to beat the heat.

The park and splash pad are open from dawn to dusk. The Orono Park Pool is open during scheduled swims in July and August only and will remain open when it rains, except during thunder or lightning.

Orono Park celebrated its centennial last year. The village of Orono, which is nearing its bicentennial, was founded in 1832 and incorporated as a ‘Police Village’ in 1854. Buttercup Hollow Park, then known as Orono Memorial Park, was established in 1923.
