A man from Brampton is facing numerous charges after a stolen SUV, police say he was driving, was involved in a three-vehicle car crash in north Whitby that sent a woman to hospital.
Police were called to Clarington’s Mearns Avenue and Concession Road 3 area regarding a stolen vehicle around 8:30 on January 6. A Toyota RAV4 was left idling in the driveway when, police allege, the man drove off in it.
Minutes later police spotted the vehicle driving down Highway 401 as it exited at Lakeridge Road. Officers pursued the SUV in attempt to get the driver to pull over. When the driver did not stop, officers broke off the pursuit citing public safety concerns.
The driver continued to speed down Lakeridge Road, police say. When he reached the intersection of Highway 7, he was involved in a collision with two other vehicles.
A woman in a white Audi involved in the crash was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries after Whitby Fire Services extricated her from the vehicle.
The suspect fled from the scene on foot, but was arrested a short distance away.
Gurdip Singh, 29, of Brampton, is charged with; theft over $5,000, possession over $5,000, dangerous driving, fleeing police and driving while prohibited. He will remain in custody until a bail hearing.
