A 109-year-old bridge over the Rouge River at the Toronto-Pickering border has been closed to motorized traffic due to “safety concerns” discovered during recent inspections.
Stott’s Bridge, located on Twyn Rivers Drive over the Rouge River (officially Bridge ID803), will remain open for cyclists and pedestrians while engineering staff from the City of Toronto – which has jurisdiction of the bridge – conducts further assessments.
Details on the safety issues identified during the inspection were not disclosed but the City of Toronto has promised updates and repair timelines will be made available.
Stott’s Bridge was built in 1915 and is part of the connection for Twyn Rivers Drive in Pickering with Sheppard Avenue in Toronto on the west. The bridge is located inside the Rouge National Urban Park.
The closure began on Friday, July 5 at 11 a.m. and a statement from the City of Pickering advises drivers to “adjust your travel plans accordingly.”
The bridge passed inspection in 2020, though the condition of the structure was just considered ‘fair’ at the time by engineering staff.
