The village of Orono is nearing its bicentennial, the Town Hall celebrated its 125th birthday last year and on Saturday it’s Orono Park’s turn as the park – affectionally known by locals as ‘Buttercup Hollow Park” – get its moment in the sun for its centennial party.

The park, which has a splash pad, playground, tennis and pickleball courts, an outdoor pool and a skatepark, is one of Orono’s gems and Clarington and the Orono BIA will be sparkling up the place for the centennial celebrations Saturday, with the festivities running from 11-3.

There’s also a free swim from noon to 3.

There will be a BBQ, birthday cake, a hardball game (up to 18 years) and special guests, including Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue, Orono Horticulture Society and the Lions Foundation of Canada Guide Dogs.

Most people will be making it to the party on foot as there is parking only for those with accessible stickers.

Orono was founded in 1832 and incorporated as a ‘Police Village’ in 1854. Buttercup Hollow Park, then known as Orono Memorial Park, was established in 1923.
