Two young girls, age nine and 12, are in hospital after they were hit by a car in Ajax.

The pair were crossing Williamson Road near Seggar Avenue shortly after 6 p.m. when a grey Honda SUV struck them. The intersection is home to a suburban neighbourhood and a small shopping plaza.

Both girls needed to be rushed to hospital. The nine-year-old girl suffered critical injuries, and the 12-year-old was seriously hurt. Both have since stabilized.

The SUV driver, a 44-year-old man, was unhurt. He stayed at the scene and cooperated with the Durham Police investigation. He has not been charged with any crime.

This investigation shuttered the roadway for several hours but it has long since reopened.
