Clarington celebrates Black History Month in the community

As Black History Month begins, Clarington is celebrating and honouring the legacy and rich history of the Black community.

“This month is an opportunity to engage in open dialogue and recommit to learning more about the stories of Black communities, their struggles to achieve racial justice, and how they shape Canadian history,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster. “This is how we honour the past, present and future contributions of Black Canadians.”

Foster is encouraging residents to learn more the history by participating in one of the community events taking place in Clarington and across Durham Region this month.

“Clarington is strengthened by its growing diversity. However, systemic racism and racial discrimination are heartbreaking realities in our society, faced by far too many people. This month and every month, we must recognize the hard-won progress and impact that has been made and acknowledge where we still have work to do.”

“Let us be tireless advocates for diversity and inclusion in Clarington. We have a responsibility to work together toward equity and a brighter future for us all.”
