The Region of Durham, Clarington, and other area municipalities are coming together this month to help raise awareness, food donations and funds to fight hunger in the community.

Hunger affects residents from across the Region 12 months of the year and with the pandemic still causing pressures on the cost of living, more people are using food banks and related services than ever before.

Feed the Need Durham has been the beneficiary of numerous events throughout the summer to fill the food bank larders and to raise money for the cause, including Century 21’s Annual Whitby BBQ and Food Drive in July, the Vintage Vendors Fundraiser in Ajax in June and Durham Regional Police’s Cram the Cruiser event in May, to name a few.

Enbridge Gas also donated $5,000 to the charity July 29.

September is Hunger Action Month and from September 6 to 29, the Region, Clarington, and other area municipalities will have numerous drop-off locations to make it easy for residents, businesses and community groups to drop off non-perishable food items.

Feed the Need in Durham is the Regional Distribution Hub for emergency food providers in the community. They collect surplus and donated perishable and non-perishable food and other product to support frontline providers such as food banks, shelters, meal programs, in-school nutritional programs and other social service agencies.

“Together with our community at large, we are nourishing our neighbours facing food insecurity.”

Food donations come from a variety of sources including distribution centres, store recovery programs, retail stores, food drives, manufacturers, individuals and families.
