It’s official: Clarington Council’s election results have now been officially certified.

Municipal Clerk June Gallagher gave official certification to the new council Wednesday, two days after Clarington residents went to the polls. The first meeting and swearing-in ceremony of the 2022-2026 Clarington Council will take place Monday, November 21.

Here’s the makeup:

  • Adrian Foster – Mayor
  • Granville Anderson – Regional Councillor, Wards 1 and 2 (Defeated Councillor Janice Jones by 143 votes)
  • Willie Woo – Regional Councillor, Wards 3 and 4 (Acclaimed)
  • Sami Elhajjeh – Local Councillor, Ward 1 (*New on Council)
  • Lloyd Rang – Local Councillor, Ward 2 (*New on Council)
  • Corinna Traill – Local Councillor, Ward 3
  • Margaret Zwart – Local Councillor, Ward 4

Voter turnout in this election was 28 per cent. That’s slightly less than the voter turnout in the last municipal election but 8,000-plus more people were eligible to vote in 2022.

Of those who voted, 18 per cent submitted their vote during the advanced voting period, compared to only four per cent in 2018.

There were 20,606 votes tabulated in total – 1,928 more than in 2018 – with 96 per cent of electors choosing to vote using an online device and four per cent voting by telephone.

This is the first municipal election in Clarington where electors cast their votes electronically and the results were available to the public and media quicker than anywhere else in Durham Region.
