Clarington Mayor “delighted” with Darlington SMR announcement

Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster said he is “delighted” with the news Ontario and OPG are building three additional small modular reactors (SMR) at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station near Bowmanville.
Foster said in a press release work is already underway in build Canada’s first SMR at Darlington. “Expanding the project from one reactor to four will do even more to build a reliable, affordable, and clean electricity supply and attract more investment in our local economy.”
A single SMR delivers enough electricity to [power 300,000 homes. Today’s announcement, he said, will create enough electricity to power 1.2 million homes.
“The expanded Darlington SMR project will mean thousands of jobs during construction and hundreds of local jobs during operations. It’s an investment that will drive economic growth and job creation in Clarington, now and into the future,” he added. “Today we sow seeds that will root our community at the centre of a global renaissance for the nuclear industry. Our highly skilled nuclear industry workers will supply products, services and expertise to a global SMR market.”
“We are excited to work with the Provincial government and OPG to take this next step in new nuclear technology.”
