Hiking the dozen-plus trails in Clarington will be made a lot easier once again this winter thanks to a decision by council to clear snow and ice from nearly 10 kilometres of paths in Bowmanville, Courtice and Newcastle.

The municipality contracted out the plowing last year and this year will add a 1.6 kilometre portion of the Waterfront Trail along Lakebreeze Drive in Newcastle to the list, with other portions on the Waterfront Trail from Newcastle to Bowmanville to be considered during January’s budget deliberations.

Farewell Creek Trail, Bowmanville Valley Trail, Soper Creek Valley Trail, Newcastle Lions Trail and Samuel Wilmot Nature Valley Trail were cleared last season. Five portions of the Waterfront Trail in addition to the trail along Lakebreeze Drive) and a section of the Courtice Shores Trail are under consideration to be added in 2022.

The cost to clear the approved 9.4-kilometres of trail is approximately $71,ooo.
