Coupon fraud claims to support Clarington Flames Girls hockey

Durham Police allege a group is selling coupon books under the false claim of supporting the Clarington Flames girls’ hockey team.
The investigation began on May 21 after officers received reports of a group going door-to-door selling these booklets with the claim all proceeds will go to the team.
However, the investigation discovered no connection between this group and the Clarington Flames. The team has not received any donations connected to the booklets.
The coupons also turned up at Papa’s Pizza Land in Whitby and Bowmanville. The restaurants were also led to believe the proceeds of the coupons would go to the team.
However, both Papa’s Pizza Land locations will continue to honour any purchased coupons
Investigators do not know where the funds are actually headed and advise residents to avoid purchasing coupons purportedly donating to the Flames.
Anyone who purchased coupons or has information about the case can file a report online. They can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
