After peaking at 92 new cases last Thursday COVID-19 numbers in Durham are back in a downward spiral, with 74 reported Friday, 56 Saturday and 40 Sunday.

There was one new death to report Friday from Ajax. The death is the 449th in Durham Region since the pandemic was declared just over two years ago.

Oshawa had by far the most new cases Friday at 28 – nearly double the next highest (Clarington) in fact – while Whitby had the highest on both Saturday (14) and Sunday (12). Whitby was the only town with new case totals in double figures yesterday.

There are five outbreaks right now at long-term care homes and retirement residences. The biggest is at Hillsdale Estates in Oshawa with five. The outbreak at Abbeylawn Manor in Pickering, which was declared February 9 and spread to 28 people, has now been declared over.

There are 19 people in local hospitals with COVID and 35 patients ‘under investigation’ for the virus.
