Fingers crossed the positive signs continue after just 70 new cases of the COVID-19 virus were reported in Durham Region Thursday – after 127 the day before – with the active case count now reduced to 412.

Institutional outbreaks in Durham dropped to seven with none bigger than eight residents and staff affected. That outbreak – at Abbeylawn Retirement Centre in Pickering – was at 14 Wednesday.

Hospitals in the region are reporting 38 patients with COVID, with six still in intensive care.

Whitby reported the highest number of new cases at 18, followed by Clarington with 15 and Oshawa with 14. Ajax, which has been the leader in cases per 100,000 population since the pandemic began, reported just six new cases.
