There’s good news and bad news on the COVID-19 front in Durham Region.

The good news is the underlying numbers are down practically across the board, according to weekly statistics released by the Region of Durham Health Department. The bad news is the number of deaths in Durham for the January 8-14 period did not change: three people died from the virus for the second week in a row, bringing the total number of deaths in the Region since the spring of 2020 to 535.

The number of people in hospital with the virus fell from 42 to 37, with two in intensive care. The number of new cases also dropped to 254 from 291 the previous reporting period. And both the per cent positivity (10.5 per cent from 11.6 per cent) and the incidence rate per 100,000 people (34.6 from 39.7) saw encouraging and significant decreases.

Outbreaks in local institutions (retirement centres, hospitals and long term care homes) fell from 16 to 12 and wastewater testing for the virus has been stable or decreasing as well.
