Wastewater testing shows the COVID-19 virus is still hanging around in Durham Region but every indicator is pointing to the virus being in full retreat.

New cases continue to drop and there were just 62 in the April 20-26 period, down dramatically from 102 the week before. Outbreaks at local hospitals, long term care homes and retirement centres was cut in half from six to three and the number of COVID cases in hospitals fell from 20 to 11, with four in intensive care.

Other numbers are positive as well. The per cent positivity rate is 4.8 per cent (from 5.4 per cent) and the weekly incidence rate (per 100,000 population) dropped from 13.9 to just 8.5.

The most important number of all didn’t decrease, but only because it was a mathematical impossibility: the number of deaths from COVID-19 last week remained at zero.
