There is some good news on the COVID-19 front this week, with the underlying numbers in five of the six categories all down. The only exception is the number of deaths, with one fatality from the virus in the September 3-9 period, the first death from COVID in Durham Region in months.

The number of new cases dropped from 78 to 61 and the patients in hospital with the virus fell to 22 from 31, though there is one patient in intensive care.

The per cent positivity rate is now 12.6 per cent (from 15.5 per cent last period) and the weekly incidence rate (per 100,000 population) fell to 8.3 from 10.6.

Outbreaks at local hospitals, long term care homes and retirement centres also decreased from eight to five, with one outbreak currently at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville.
