The news is all good on the COVID-19 front this week as all underlying numbers related to the virus are down; most for the second straight week.

Hospitalizations have fallen to 29 (from 37 the previous week) and the number of new cases continued to drop: it’s at 215 for the week ending January 21, from 254 the previous reporting period.

The per cent positivity rate is now below ten per cent at 9.2 per cent (from 10.5 per cent) and the weekly incidence rate per 100,000 population is under 30 at 29.3. It was 34.6 the previous week.

Outbreaks at retirement centres, hospitals and long term care homes has dropped dramatically, with just seven around the region and none in local hospitals. And the most important number of all? Zero, as in zero deaths from the virus that has killed 535 Durham residents since the pandemic was declared nearly three years ago.
