Statistics can be confusing and often misleading but when viral numbers continue to rise week after week the picture becomes clear: we are in the seventh wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Most of the numbers have spiked, including hospitalizations (39) and the total number of new cases (428). The per cent positivity rate has been going up for weeks and now sits at 13 per cent. The weekly incident rate has been rising dramatically and has doubled in just three weeks, going from 29.0 to 37.9 to 48.1 to last week’s number of an alarming 58.3.

The good news is there were no new deaths reported in the week of July 10-16 after two people died from the virus in the previous reporting period.

There are 13 ongoing outbreaks at institutions and long-term care homes, including two at local hospitals.
