One officer in training is dead and another is in life-threatening condition following a crash near London on Tuesday.
The crash happened near the Ontario Police College in Aylmer, approximately 45 kilometres south of London, the Durham Regional Police Service says.
Two DRPS Constables In Training (CIT) were travelling to training when the crash happened, police say.
“It is with deep sadness that I share that one CIT has lost their life, while the other remains in life-threatening condition,” Durham police Chief Peter Moreira said in a statement.
“During this difficult time, our focus is on supporting the families of our CIT’s, as well as their classmates, instructors, friends, and members of our Service who are grieving this tragic loss. We will continue to ensure they receive the care and support they need.”
The names of the victims have not been released, and police asked the public to “respect the privacy of the families and all those affected as they navigate this unimaginable tragedy.”
There have been multiple police deaths in Ontario in recent months. Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Brandon Malcolm, 33, died in a motorcycle crash in Cobourg, Ont., on April 27.
OPP Const. Tarun Bali, 29, was fatally struck by a vehicle in Hearst, Ont., on June 9. A suspect was charged with first-degree murder and other offences, while Toronto Police Service Const. Marc Pinizzotto was killed in a shooting on June 11.
