Design work is underway on the “heart” of Pickering’s new City Centre, with city council hiring architects MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects Ltd. to get a $15 million park project started.
Identified in January as council’s #2 capital budget priority in the first phase of the City Centre redevelopment, the park design drew 15 proposals before council selected the Liberty Village (Toronto) architects to perform the work, with their services valued at $744,105.
The final design will be presented to council by early summer 2025, with the park block available for construction start in late 2025 or early 2026, once the existing underground services are removed.
As part of the mall redevelopment and City Centre Master Plan, project builders CentreCourt has offered 1.42 acres of parkland to the City of Pickering for the construction of the urban park, located in the existing parking lot directly across from Glenanna Road and the Pickering Civic Complex.
Desired features in the park identified through community engagement include:
- outdoor skating rink (winter)
- public event space (summer)
- public washroom
- water feature(s)
- public art
- large shade structure ‘stage’ area
- soft landscaping/trees
- public seating/gathering areas
The park is to expected to become the “heart of the City Centre,” according to a staff report, and will be multi-functional and able to host many different city events.
