The Diane Hamre Recreation Complex in Newcastle has reopened after shutting down Wednesday afternoon due to a mechanical issue with the emergency lighting power source.

All registered and drop-in recreation, fitness and aquatic programs and activities were cancelled Wednesday at 4 p.m. and remain shuttered all day Thursday.

The necessary repairs to the emergency lighting system were completed in time to re-open Friday. Staff are now charging the back-up batteries and will test the operation Friday evening to confirm the systems are “fully returned to normal.”

All programs and activities are now running as scheduled.

Additional swim times were added to the schedule at the Courtice Community Complex Thursday to help fill the program gap.
