A recent rise in pickpocketing and distraction thefts has prompted a warning from Durham Regional Police.

Reports indicate a jump in these incidents, according to a police release on Feb. 2. This led investigators to warn residents to keep their valuables out of sight of potential thieves. Police also warned residents not to leave valuables unattended in their cars.

They also said residents should keep wallets in their front pockets and purses in front of their bodies.

“Protect yourself by staying vigilant and aware of your surroundings,” police added.
