A family dog died in a fire on Vancouver Street in Oshawa Thursday morning, but emergency personnel were able to save another dog and several cats.

The fire started in the basement and spread to the second floor before firefighters were able to get it under control.

Fire officials say everyone had managed to escape the home by the time firefighters arrived. There is no word yet on the cause of the blaze.
