Domestic assault

A Pickering man accused of domestic assault, as well as more than 200 harassment texts sent over a two-day period while he was out of the country, was arrested and charged on his re-entry to Canada at Pearson Airport on Tuesday.

Durham Police executed a warrant on the 43-year-old man – his name was withheld to protect the identity of the victim – Tuesday morning. The man was being held in the custody of Canada Border Services Agency.

In addition to the texts, the victim reported a series of assaults that occurred throughout their relationship. An arrest warrant was granted to members of the Durham Police Intimate Partner Violence Unit.

The man was charged with four counts of assault and criminal harassment and was held for a bail hearing.

Durham Police say intimate partner violence can take many forms, including physical harm as well as emotional abuse, verbal insults, manipulation, financial control and isolation from friends and family.
