Driver charged in fatal Clarington crash into pedestrians

A man is dead and two others, including a baby, are injured after a suspected impaired driver struck them in Clarington.

A grey Hyundai sedan struck a grey Hyundai Tucson SUV on Simpson Avenue in Bowmanville shortly after 8:30 p.m. on July 21, Durham Police said. Both cars were headed southbound on Simpson Avenue when they collided.

The sedan then lost control and barrelled onto the sidewalk where it struck three pedestrians; a man, a woman and a baby. All three were rushed to hospital where the man was pronounced dead.

The woman was seriously injured and the baby received non-life-threatening injuries. Additionally, a woman riding in the Tucson was also hurt.

Liam James Patrick Kendall, 22 of Clarington, is charged with;

  • impaired driving causing death,
  • three counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm,
  • dangerous driving causing death,
  • three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, and
  • driving without insurance.

He remains in custody until his bail hearing.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragic incident. Our dedicated collision investigation team continues to gather evidence to form a complete picture of this incident so that the driver can be held accountable for their actions,” wrote the Durham Police Traffic Unit.

The Collision Investigation Unit shut down the area for several hours to investigate the circumstances of the crash. The area has since reopened.
