A man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle while waiting for the bus yesterday in Whitby.

Durham Regional Police say the crash happened around 12:50 p.m. near Rossland Road East and Fencerow Drive, when a Dodge Ram pickup, driven by a 65-year-old Oshawa man, mounted the curb, crossed the boulevard and hit the pedestrian.

The truck continued east, hitting two Bell service boxes before crashing through fences and coming to a stop in a pool at a nearby home on Ravenview Drive.

The pedestrian, a 28-year-old man from Whitby, was transported to a trauma hospital in Toronto where he remains in critical condition.

Collision investigators closed the area for several hours to examine the scene and police say the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt. Dave Ashfield of the Collision Investigation Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5262. Anonymous tips can be sent to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, where tipsters may qualify for a $2,000 reward.
