The ASGC Group, a privately-owned, vertically integrated Dubai-based construction conglomerate with 18,000 employees worldwide is looking to expand into Canada and has Pickering on its short list.
Company CEO Bishop Azmy and his team dropped in for what is described as a “high level visit” with Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan, CEO Marisa Carpino and key staff last week.
Ryan said ASGC, which also has offices in Egypt and England, made Pickering a “priority destination” during their recent visit to the Toronto area. “Pickering presents a unique opportunity to many investors looking to expand or relocate their business and has prestige employment lands available for high-tech jobs in a variety of sectors,” explained Ryan. “We use opportunities like this to showcase available lands, talents, and partnership opportunities to bring new investment and jobs to Pickering. “
ASGC is one of the Arab world’s more forward-thinking companies, with a woman in charge of Human Resources who believes “policies must be written with diversity and inclusion as the foundation.” Mariam Azmy, who has made it a personal goal to hire – and keep – more women for the construction industry – declared that “recruitment and retention of women is everyone’s business.”
The company has already begun its Canadian expansion. Toronto-based Rio Can recently sold 50 per cent interest in two residential developments – Dufferin Plaza (Toronto) and Killam Apartments (Ottawa) to Maplelands Developments, a subsidiary of ASGC.
Established in 1989 and headquartered in Dubai, ASGC provides its services across diverse sectors including residential, commercial, industrial, leisure, hospitality, healthcare, transportation and social infrastructure. The ASGC Group is a contractor to governments and blue-chip private enterprises, delivering landmark projects such as the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai, expansion and improvement works for Dubai International Airport, expansion of the Dubai Mall, the Waldorf Astoria on the Palm Jumeirah as well as several pavilions for Dubai EXPO 2020.
ASGC is majority owned by its founders, Mohamed Saif Bin Shafar, Emad Azmy and Mohammed Al Sayyah, who remain its chairman, vice chairman and a non-executive director respectively.
