Durham Police add 16 new recruits after graduation ceremony in Ajax

Durham Regional Police had their ranks swelled by 16 Tuesday with the addition of new officers at a graduation ceremony in Ajax.

The graduates were piped into the ceremony and occasion also featured the talents of the Durham Police Choir, with friends and family of the newest members of the police service there to offer their support.

Deputy Chief Chris Kirkpatrick, in his first ceremony in his new role, presented each recruit with their badge.

“Policing requires courage, compassion, and a commitment to the highest ethical standards of your office as constables,” he told the graduates. “The challenges you will face are diverse and dynamic, but I am confident that the training you have undergone has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to navigate through these challenges.”

Class valedictorian Cst. Sarah Heydon spoke on behalf of the graduating class and thanked her fellow classmates for their support and encouragement during their training. “I could not be more proud of us. What an absolute pleasure it has been growing, learning, persevering and going forward, serving, with you.”

Victoria March was presented with the Allan D Christiansen Memorial Award as voted by the recruit class. This award honours March for her positive attitude in life and training, exceptional leadership qualities, dedication to a high level of personal fitness and commitment to volunteering.

The officers will join platoons across Durham Region and receive training from coach officers for the next three months.
