More than 90 pre-teen leaders and potential future police officers had a four-day experience to remember last week at the Durham Regional Police Service Youth in Policing (YIP) Initiative’s Junior YIP Leadership Camp.
The free camp for youth aged 10 to 13 at Donald Wilson Secondary in Whitby packed in a lot of fun and educational experiences, with the 93 campers enjoying a blend of adventure, creativity, and community engagement from August 12-15.
With the theme of Elements, the Water, Fire, Air, Earth, and Spirit teams took to the course to win with teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving. Throughout the four days, the camp aimed to spark support, passion, ambition, respect, and kindness – qualities that work well with a career in policing or any path the camper choose.
Day one of the 15th annual event featured icebreakers, artwork out of newspapers and special guests from the DRPS K-9 Unit. Day two got the kids outside and exploring nature through a forest walk, an Amazing Race-styled competition, and a mock crime scene investigation with the Forensics Unit. Day three focused on problem-solving and critical thinking via a Murder Mystery activity, X-Movement presentation, and demonstrations from the DRPS Drone team and Traffic Services Unit. The final day showcased the Tactical Support Unit and allowed campers to showcase their talents and skills through ‘YIPs Got Talent.’
The campers were joined by 21 regular and auxiliary officers to underscore the importance of building relationships that foster trust and confidence within local communities.
