Transit users in Durham will have to fork out some extra coin – from as little as a nickel to as much as 45 cents – to take the bus, starting July 1.

Effective July 1, single-ride PRESTO fares on Durham Region Transit (DRT) will increase to $3.35 (from 3.25) for adults; $3 (from $2.90) for youth – 13 to 19; and $2.20 (from $2.15) for seniors.

Single-ride cash fares, including debit and credit payments, will increase 35 cents to $4.35 for adults and youth, and 45 cents to $3.20 for seniors.

Monthly fares will jump from $117 to $120.60 for adults; $93.50 to $96.50 for youth; and $46 to $48.25 for seniors.

Kids 12 and under will continue to ride for free.

The fare increase is part of DRT’s 10-year strategy to invest in service enhancements, introduce electrification, and offer new facilities and amenities.

Public transit helps connect people to employment and educational opportunities; supports travel to shopping, dining and tourism destinations; and ensures all residents have access to essential mobility services across the region.
