Ed the Sock, a sock puppet that was a popular, albeit crude, character on Citytv as a co-star of Ed’s Night Party from 1995 to 2008, is returning to the airwaves in Oshawa starting May 2 at midnight.
Voiced by Steve Kerzner, Ed the Sock has become an active and sometimes polarizing figure on Twitter in recent years, spending most of his time lampooning alt-right personalities.
Kerzner announced on the social media platform Monday that he will be reviving the all night show format style of Ed’s Night Party on Oshawa radio station 94.9 The Rock. The character will be playing music and taking calls from listeners.
Ed the Sock is a sock puppet character with green hair, round eyes, a scowl, a cigar and a rough, gravelly voice that was created and voiced by Kerzner since first appearing on local cable in Downsview im suburban Toronto in 1987.
Ed’s name is based on Ed Asner from Mary Tyler Moore fame.
Ed’s Night Party (it was called Ed & Red’s Night party in its final season when it was co-hosted by Kerzner’s wife Liana) on Citytv was Canada’s longest running Canadian late night talk show when it was cancelled in 2008. Ed the Sock also made regular appearances on Much Music (1995-2005), where he helped create the short-lived Ed’s Big Wham Bam and hosted the successful Fromage programs.
Ed the Sock and Liana moved to CHCH-TV in Hamilton in 2010 and produced shows such as This Movie Sucks and I Hate Hollywood until his contract was not renewed in 2012. The character lived on at FU Network and NewMusicNation until the deal was struck with Oshawa’s 94.9 The Edge and owners Durham Radio Inc.
