Electric vehicle sales may have been a little slower than anticipated as Canada moves to an all-electric world in ten years but it has been historic EV sales that carried General Motors to the top of the Canadian sales heap for the second year in a row.
GM Canada is the industry leader for 2024 with 294,315 vehicles sold – up 11.9 per cent – which was good enough to capture more than 15 per cent of the total market.
The Oshawa-based company had its best EV sales year ever after releasing four new EV models in 2024: Chevrolet Equinox EV, Cadillac Escalade IQ EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV and the GMC Sierra EV. Sales of gas-powered vehicles also remained strong, led by sales of small SUVs, which rose 12 per cent over the previous year. Cadillac and GMC also both celebrated their best total sales years in Canadian history.
GM Canada closed out 2024 on a run of ten consecutive quarters of growth.
“It was another banner year for GM Canada leading the industry with 15.4 per cent share and closing in on the top spot for EV sales in Canada,” said GM Canada Sales, Service and Marketing VP Shane Peever, who added that the company is “poised for growth” in 2025.
Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac EV sales were up 109 per cent over 2023 while light duty truck sales jumped eight per cent, led by the Oshawa-made Chevrolet Silverado (up five per cent) and the GMC Sierra (up 11 per cent).
