The Ontario Regiment’s tank museum event season kicks off Saturday with Evolution, a look at the changes in soldiers and their armoured fighting vehicles through the ages.

Visitors can explore the history and evolution of warfare from knights in shining armour to the main battle tanks of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Reenactments, living history displays, musket fire, cannon fire demonstrations, a militaria market presented by the Ontario Military Vehicle Association and a finale live Tank Show in the World of Tanks Arena will cap off the day.

The date was formerly held for the Aquino weekend, the biggest event on the museum’s calendar, where a re-enactment is held commemorating the 1944 Battle of Aquino in which the Ontario Regiment played a pivotal role control of the Hitler Line, a German defensive line in Italy which blocked the advance on Rome.

“When we moved Aquino,” the museum said in a news release, “we had to plan something almost as awesome.”

Normandy, to be held on the 80th anniversary of D-Day, follows on June 8 while Aquino, a two-day extravaganza, will now be held July 26-27.
