Summer may be still officially on the calendar but with the kids back in school, a tiny chill in the air and the region’s fall fair season in full swing, it is definitely fall in Durham.
Fall fairs kicked off on the Labour Day long weekend with the Port Perry Fall Fair (August 31-September 2) and there are two major events happening in north Durham this weekend: The Orono Fall Fair in Clarington’s northeast corner September 5-8; and the Uxbridge Fall Fair September 6-8.
The week following will see two more: the mid-week Sunderland Fall Fair on Tuesday, September 10 and Wednesday, September 11; and Beaverton’s Fall Fair September 13-14.
Vintage tractor displays, midways, livestock competitions, kids rodeos, craft shows, entertainment (usually with a beer tent) attract people of all ages to the annual fairs, which are a popular attraction for the small communities that host them and a reminder that there’s more to life in Durham Region than its urban centres along the lakefront.
